FAQ - Gunii

(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. General Information

What is Biltong?

Biltong is a delicious, air-dried cured meat originating from South Africa. It's made from high-quality beef, seasoned with spices, and then carefully dried to create a unique, flavorful snack.

What makes Gunii Biltong unique?

We use traditional South African recipes, premium ingredients, and authentic drying techniques that I have obtained and perfected over many years of making Biltong from a young age while growing up on a farm in South Africa. Our focus on quality and flavour combinations sets us apart.

How is Biltong different from Jerky?

While both are dried meats, Biltong is air-dried, resulting in a softer, more tender texture compared to Jerky, which is dehydrated with heat and has a more chewy texture. Biltong uses natural spices like coriander, pepper, and salt in its marinade that enhances the taste for an authentic beef flavor, whereas Jerky is typically sweeter and smoked.

What’s the difference between Biltong and Droëwors?

Biltong: Dried, seasoned meat slices or chunks, typically beef or game.

Droëwors: A dried sausage made from ground beef or game, similar in flavor but with a different texture due to its sausage-like preparation.

What is the story behind Gunii Biltong Shop?

I grew up on a farm in South Africa where Biltong making was a very common thing to do. I experimented with different methods and ingredient mixtures, which led me to find the best combinations to produce a top-quality product. After moving to Germany, I decided to share this unique South African snack with others.
